‘Drinking Water’ is a participatory project created by Australian dance artist Sete Tele and Canadian interdisciplinary artist Lisa Hirmer. In response to the precarity of water systems around the world and the increasing injustices around the use and distribution of water, this multifaceted work examines the movements of water relative to human life – at the scale of the body, the scale of inter-human and human-place relationships, and at the scale of the planet. In the months leading up to the Biennale, Hirmer and Tele will invite members of the Fremantle community to participate in the project as water collectors. Harnessing survival techniques for tracing and gathering water, the artists and participants will create a space to consider our relationship to this vital resource and the ways water as a material can resist commodification.
The artists are currently calling for Fremantle households to participate in ‘Drinking Water’ as local water collectors. More information here.
Lisa Hirmer is an interdisciplinary artist who works across visual media (particularly photography), social practice, performance and sometimes writing. She is primarily concerned with collective relationships—that which exists between things, rather than simply in them—in communities, publics and other assemblies of people as well as in human relationships with the more-than-human world.
Sete Tele‘s aesthetic is to re-contextualise the human to human, whereby the rules of interaction are challenged to navigate a paradigm shift arriving at a new protocol. Improvisation is his base that yields all aspects of practice: the constant exploring and shifting of material unveils what is appropriate. This solid foundation continues to evolve, to be reconfigured in response to the requirements of the project at hand.
