Join acclaimed artist and innovator Daan Roosegaarde, co-founder and director of the Minderoo Foundation, Nicola Forrest, and environmental virtue ethics expert Dr. Nin Kirkham in a discussion on their current projects and pioneering technologies that look towards the liveability of our future landscapes. The Panel is moderated by Margaret Moore.
Daan Roosegaarde
Dutch artist and innovator Daan Roosegaarde (1979) is a creative thinker and maker of social designs which explore the relation between people, technology and space. Roosegaarde has been driven by nature’s gifts such as light emitting fireflies and jellyfishes since an early age. His fascination for nature and technology is reflected in his iconic designs such as Smart Highway (roads which charge from sunlight and glow at night), Waterlicht (a virtual flood) and Smog Free Project (the largest outdoor air purifier in the world which makes jewellery from smog).
Roosegaarde graduated from The Berlage Institute with a master in architecture. He founded Studio Roosegaarde in 2007, where he works with his team of designers and engineers towards a better future. Together they develop ‘Landscapes of the Future’ building smart sustainable prototypes for the cities of tomorrow. Roosegaarde is a Young Global Leader at the World Economic Forum and named Artist of the Year 2016 in The Netherlands.
Roosegaarde has won the London Design Innovation Medal, the INDEX Design Award, the World Technology Award, two Dutch Design Awards, the Charlotte Köhler Award, and China’s Most Successful Design Award. He exhibited at the Design Museum in London, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, Tate Modern, Tokyo National Museum, Le Musée des Arts Décoratifs Paris, Victoria & Albert Museum and various public spaces in Europe and Asia. Nicola Forrest
Nicola is a co-founder and director of the Minderoo Foundation, leading its community and arts programs and its work in early childhood development. Together with her husband Andrew, Nicola tackles some of the world’s greatest challenges, to create lasting change. In 2019 she was awarded an Officer of the Order of Australia for her distinguished contribution to the community. Nicola is chair of the Black Swan State Theatre Company, a board member of the Early Years Initiative and in 2018, was inducted into the WA Women’s Hall Of Fame.
Dr Nin Kirkham
Dr Nin Kirkham completed her PhD in Philosophy in 2008 and has been working at theUniversity of Western Australia since that time. Her PhD research focused on Environmental Virtue Ethics and in particular the concepts of nature and naturalness as they are employed in debates in Environmental Ethics, Bioethics and Technology. She currently teaches in the areas of Critical Thinking, Continental Philosophy, and Ethics. Nin also has extensive experience teaching Professional Ethics and Critical Thinking into disciplines outside Philosophy, including Engineering, Business and Science. Her other job is the care of her two children.
Margaret Moore
Margaret Moore is founder and Director of MOORE CONTEMPORARY, a gallery platform committed to the presentation and promotion of international and local contemporary art practice. Its establishment follows significant public roles that have included Curator and Program Manager: Visual Arts at the Perth International Arts Festival, and curatorial, management and educational positions at the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Art Gallery of New South Wales and National Gallery of Australia. She has contributed to cultural developments and advocacy through numerous board positions, major projects, and published writing. She is current Chair of the Murdoch University Art Collection Board, a member of University of Western Australia Collections Advisory Board, and a former Chair of the Board of the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art. Margaret Moore is a curatorial and collection advisory consultant to select corporate and private collections that includes Woodside Energy and KPMG.
