Old Customs House
2-24 Nov | Thur-Sun | 10am-4pm
FREE
Kayako Nakashima intervenes within architectural spaces by referencing former spatial occupation through the use of perforation, light and liquid. Old Customs House will be transformed into a sea of sunlight. Here the artist will manipulate natural light to construct an artificial environment where the central void becomes permeated with natural light. The viewer is invited to lie on a bed and witness the subtle dance of golden rays conversing with the space of the atrium.
Kayako Nakashima completed Kyoto Seika University in 2013, followed by a Master’s program at the Tokyo University of the Arts in 2015. She is currently a doctoral student at the same university. Using our relationship with place as a starting point, she creates works that allow us to rethink ways of seeing and interpreting the world surrounding us. Her work was featured as part of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale (2012, 2015) and the Setouchi Triennale (2013).
